Plot

As a boy, Yi Seil injures his leg in a minor accident and becomes crippled. He is teased for his leg, and called a jellyfish. Seil does not cause anyone harm, however. He herds cattle for a living, and quietly lives his life.

1998년에 출간된 이순원의 소설이다. 작품은 어린시절 사고로 불구가 된 주인공의 이야기다. 작가는 타인으로부터 받는 정신적 물리적 폭력을 조용히 수용하면서 살아갈 수 밖에 없었던 보통의 순박한 사람의 이야기를 전해준다. 특히 한국사회에서 장애인이 겪었던 고통과 슬픔을 담담하지만 강력하게 보여주고 있다.

This novel by Lee Soon-won was published in 1998. It tells the story of a man who becomes disabled because of an accident that happened when he was a young boy, showing how a simple, ordinary man has no choice but to accept the mental and physical violence that others inflict on him. In a restrained but powerful way, the novel depicts the pain and sorrow experienced by the disabled in Korean society.
