1993년에 출간된 신경숙의 소설집이다. 표제작을 비롯하여 <직녀들>, <배드민턴 치는 여자>, <새야, 새야>, <해변의 의자>등 모두 9편이 수록되어 있다. 작가는 상실해서 좌절하며 불안하고 외로우며 위태로운 삶을 지탱하고 있는 여성인물들을 통해 인간의 실존에 대해 말하고 있다.
