Plot

Growing up with civil servants for parents, the narrator has a quiet childhood and graduates from college without incident. For years, however, he disavows the world he lives in, ever since he and his university classmates decide there is nothing they can do in this life. The smartest among them, Seyeon, declares that she will do something groundbreaking, before committing suicide. In the meantime, the narrator learns about a site called “whydoyoulive.com,” and begins to contemplate carrying out the suicide pact he made with his classmates.

2011년에 출간된 장강명의 장편소설이다. 제16회 한겨레문학상 수상작이다. 작품은 청년들이 자신들의 현실에서는 더 이상 아무것도 꿈꿀 수 없고 할 수 있는 일이 없다고 판단한 후 서로에게 자살을 권하는 이야기다. 어떤 방법으로도 '기존의 사회'에 끼어들 틈을 찾지 못한 청년들의 좌절과 상실을 다루고 있다.

This novel by Chang Kang-myoung was published in 2011, and won the Hankyoreh Literary Award. It tells the story of young people who, after deciding that this life holds nothing in store for them, encourage one another to commit suicide. It describes the feelings of loss and frustration they experience at their seeming inability to break into established society.
