Plot

A retired wrestler is currently suffering from amnesia. With the help of a caregiver, he arranges a visit to his hometown, where he receives a hero’s welcome, but he cannot help feeling uneasy with guilt. Years ago, shortly before the Korean War, he had accused the villagers of left-wing politics, and raped a woman he did not love. Afterwards, he went to Japan, where he trained as a wrestler and later found professional success. He knows very well, however, that he is not a hero.

2005년에 출간된 전성태의 소설집<국경을 넘는 일>에 수록된 단편이다. 작품은 기억상실을 겪고 있는 은퇴한 레슬러가 자신의 고향을 방문한 일을 기록한 이야기다. 작가는 영웅으로 불렸는 레슬러를 통해 정치적 필요에 의해 조작된 영웅서사에 대해서 문제를 제기하고 있다.

This short story by Jeon Sungtae was published in the author’s short story collection Over the Border in 2005. It is about a retired wrestler suffering amnesia on a visit to his hometown. In the story, the author questions the truth behind heroic narratives, which – as in the case of the wrestler – may be contrived out of political necessity.
