Plot

Bak Yun-gyu, a trainee priest, is excommunicated for going against church doctrine. He and three others – Yi Hyeonam, who took up martial arts to take revenge on the demon that killed his brother; Jang Junhu, an orphan who can read the minds of humans and demons; and Hyeon Seunghui, an archaeology major in her twenties – form an exorcism group. They embark on a struggle against the evil demons that take over human minds.

1994년에 출간된 이우혁의 장편소설이다. 1993년 하이텔에 연재했던 작품으로 '본격 통신문학'의 효시라고 할 수 있다. 1998년 영화로 만들어졌다. 작품은 인간의 정신세계를 지배한 악한 마귀들이 사회를 범죄로 뒤덮은 것을 막기 위해 4명의 퇴마사가 나서는 이야기다. 특히 전설과 현실, 사람과 귀신의 경계와 영역을 파괴하는 상상력을 통해 서사의 폭을 넓혀 이야기의 긴장을 높였다. 국내편과 세계편으로 나뉘어져 있다.

This novel by Lee Woohyeok was published in 1994. Originally serialized on Hitel, a PC communications network, in 1993, it is what can be described as ‘communications literature’. It was adapted into a film in 1998. The novel tells the story of four exorcists attempting to stop the evil demons who are taking over human minds in a nefarious plan to overwhelm society with crime. Blurring the boundaries between the earthly and the spiritual, legend and reality, the book offers an imaginative tale full of heightened tension. The book is available in both domestic and international editions.
