This is a classic Joseon-era novel by an unknown author. Originally an oral folktale, this allegorical story about a personified rabbit and turtle was written down in novel form during the Joseon dynasty. Also known as Byeoljubujeon, Tosaengwonjeon, and Touigan, it forms the basis of the pansori Sugungga. It tells the story of a turtle who, at the Dragon King’s command, ventures onto land to obtain a rabbit’s liver for the king. At the heart of the novel is the rabbit’s ability to respond wisely to the power of the Dragon King.
