Plot

The narrator is tormented by the loss of his wife, a fact he cannot accept. He is later called to testify at the police station under suspicion of killing his brother-in-law. Confused by the death of his wife and the murder of his brother-in-law, he is unable to keep a clear mind, seemingly switching back and forth between fantasy and reality.

2000년에 출간된 하일지의 장편소설이다. 작품은 아내를 잃은 주인공이 그 죽음을 받아들이지 못하고 비정상적인 정신으로 자신을 둘러싼 살인사건에 대해서 독백하는 과정을 보여준다. 일종의 모노드라마 형식을 갖춘 작품으로 독자는 주인공의 진술을 따라가면서 정상과 비정상의 관계, 현실과 허상의 차이에 대해서 질문하게 된다.

Statement is a novel by Hailji that was published in 2000. It is told from the perspective of a mentally unstable narrator who, unable to accept the death of his wife, begins to soliloquize at length about her brother’s murder. A monodrama, the novel toys with the divide between normality and abnormality, reality and fantasy, and invites the reader to question the truth behind the narrator’s statements.
