Plot

When his wife dies giving birth to their two daughters, Janghwa and Hongryeon, Bae Muryong remarries, this time to Mrs. Heo, whose neglect of her new stepdaughters eventually leads to the girls’ deaths.

The Tale of Janghwa and Hongryeon is a classic Joseon-era novel of unknown authorship. Through its depiction of familial conflict, the work explores ethical problems that can arise from a woman’s relationship with her stepchildren, as well as the tragic fate of a family destroyed by a father’s inadequacy.
