Plot

Yunho goes to China to see a marriage broker for his older brother who became a paraplegic when he was young. There Yunho meets Haehwa, a Korean woman living in China. She marries Yunho’s brother and tries to adjust to living in Korea, but she misses home and struggles as an alien in a foreign land.

2005년에 출간된 천운영의 장편소설이다. 2004년 여름부터 2005년 여름까지 계간<문학동네>에 연재했던 작품이다. 작품은 이방인으로 사는 것의 어려움 그리고 고향과 근원에 대한 그리움으로 흔들리는 인간의 내면을 작가의 섬세한 문장으로 그려내고 있다.

This novel by Cheon Un-yeong was first serialized in the literary magazine Munhakdongne from 2004 to 2005, and published as a single title in 2005. It is a sensitive and detailed depiction of what it is like to live as an alien in a foreign land.  The writer explores the longing for one’s hometown and the origin of one’s need to belong.
