Plot

Minwu spends four years in jail for his writing, and when he is released, he finds his family living in dire poverty. Minwu’s wife begs him to write a movie or a novel that caters to the Japanese, but he refuses to betray his conscience.

단편<이녕>은 소설가 한설야가 1939년 <문장>지에 발표한 작품이다. 1946년 출간한 단편집<이녕>에도 수록되어 있다. 작가는 일제말기 가난에 몰린 지식인이 가족들의 생계가 어려운데도 불구하고 일본의 협력 요청과 강요를 거부하는 모습을 작품에 담아내었다.

This short story by Han Seolya was published in Munjang in 1939, and it later was included in the collection of Han’s stories published in 1946 with the same title. The story is about a man who refuses to betray his conscience and work for the Japanese during the Japanese occupation of Korea.
