At the end of the Yushin era in 1987, the narrator begins her life in Seoul. Living at her cousin's house, she works at a sound equipment factory in the Guro Industrial Complex, and studies in a special industrial class after work. Dreaming of becoming a novelist, she meets Huijae. Through Huijae, who is lonely and melancholy but leads her own life with a strong will, the narrator sees the beauty of a lonely existence. However, when Huijae, whom the narrator has depended on, suddenly passes away, the narrator shuts everyone out.

This is a novel by Shin Kyung-sook, published in 1999. It contains the author’s autobiographical story about her dreams of writing despite her harsh surroundings. In a way of reminiscing about her past, the main character, who was unable to love herself, conveys her inner conflicts and sorrow she felt as she began to accept herself. This novel is a record of a lonely but beautiful time described with the author’s uniquely delicate gaze and deliberate sentences.
