Plot

The narrator is a political prisoner who is released after serving five years in prison. His daughter is dead; his wife ran away, and he learns that he has stage 3 lung cancer. He continues to live only because of his old mother, but when he meets a woman surnamed Yun, he gains his salvation.

This is a short story by Lee Byeng-Ju, published in 1972. It depicts a man who underwent the Korean War and the April 19 Revolution and was unfairly incarcerated as a political prisoner. It deals with social institutions and the human lives that have been destroyed by them, and makes the reader rethink the relationship between institutions and humans, and between laws and humans.

1972년 발표된 이병주의 단편소설이다.  한국전쟁, 4ㆍ19혁명을 겪고, 억울하게 정치범으로 수용된 한 인간의 모습을 묘사하고 있다. 사회 제도와 그로 인해 파괴된 인간의 삶을  다루며 제도와 인간, 법과 인간의 관계를 다시 한 번 생각하도록 만든다.
