1998년 출간된 신경숙의 소설집<강물이 될 때까지>에 수록된 단편소설이다. 이 작품은 1980년대 후반에 발표한 것으로 거대서사에 맞서 자신만의 소설미학을 찾아가는 작가의 의지가 드러난 작품 중의 하나이다. 단편미학의 전범이라는 평가를 받았다.
