Gap-hae's father is an intellectual who had studied in Japan. However, after Korea’s liberation from the Japanese rule, he partakes in left-wing activities and ends up on the run, and rumors circulate in the village about how he will soon be caught by the police and shot to death. Gap-hae’s mother, who is raising three children, leaves in search of food but does not return. Gap-hae goes to his aunt's house in the village to find his mother. After meeting his mother and eating a bowl of soup at his aunt’s house, Gap-hae heads to the police station where her father is. There, he finds his father's corpse, and he runs toward the Nakdong River crying.
