Plot

The narrator has always worked part-time at clothing stores and supermarkets since childhood, as she grew up under the care of her mother who has liver cancer and her father who couldn't do anything else because he had to take care of his wife. While working at a bookstore that sells cigarettes, the narrator sells cigarettes to a girl named Jinju, and not long after that, the narrator learns that Jinju is missing. The narrator becomes the last person to see Jinju before her disappearance, and thus she becomes unexpectedly involved in the missing person case. The search for Jinju begins, and the narrator becomes tormented by guilt and self-excuse.

This is a short story by Hwang Jeongeun, published in the fall issue of the quarterly journal 21 segi munhak (21st Century Literature) in 2013, and it was the fifth K-Fiction published by ASIA Publishers in 2015. In addition, it is also included in the author's short story collection Amudo anin (Nobody), published in 2016. It tells the story of a girl who becomes a witness to a girl’s disappearance. With her uniquely dense and detailed language, the author expresses the main character’s guilt, anger, loneliness, and resentment.

2013년 계간지 <21세기 문학>가을호에 발표했던 황정은의 단편이며 2015년에 출간된 K-픽션 다섯번째 작품이다. 또한 2016년에 출간된 작가의 소설집<아무도 아닌>에  포함되어 있다. 작품은 주인공이 어떤 실종사건의 목격자가 되어서 벌어지는 일을 그렸다. 작가는 주인공이 느끼는 죄책감과 분노, 외로움과 억울함을 작가 특유의 치밀한 언어로 잘 드러내고 있다.
