Plot

Aelisieo suffers from her mother's constant violence. However, neither Aelisieo’s father nor the villagers stop or condemn the violence. People are only interested in the price of land in their village, designated as a planned development site. Meanwhile, Aelisieo dreams of taking a revenge on her mother. Waiting for the day when she can defeat her mother when she grows up, she wants her arms and legs to grow. And one day, she is happy when she finally finds out that her arms and legs are bigger than her mother’s.

This is a novel by Hwang Jungeun, published in 2013. It was originally serialized in the quarterly magazine Munhakdongne from the spring to the summer issues of 2012. The author uses a homeless woman as the main character to show a human being exposed to desolate and brutal violence. In addition, it raises questions about our daily life, in which many of us ignore the world destroyed by violence.

2013년에 출간된 황정은의 장편소설이다. 계간지 <문학동네>에 2012년 봄호부터 여름호까지 연재한 작품을 묶어 출간한 것이다. 작가는 여성 노숙인을 주인공으로 삼아 황폐하고 처절한 폭력에 노출된 한 인간의 모습을 보여주고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 폭력으로 파괴된 세계를 외면하는 우리의 일상에 문제를 제기하는 작품이라고 할 수 있다.
