Plot

While digging a trench, a military unit finds human remains tied by a wire. The narrator and Private First Class Oh go to a nearby village to identify the skeletons. According to the testimony of an old man, the place where the remains were found is where the villagers who were killed near the end of the Korean War were buried. The narrator thinks of his father, who became a communist partisan and defected to the North. His mother is still waiting for his father. The narrator has a sudden vision of his father, bound by wire, and imagines that he is in pain.

1984년 <문학사상>에 발표된 임철우의 단편소설이다. 이 작품은 익명의 시신을 발견하며 이를 통해 자기 삶에서 고통의 근원이었던 아버지와 화해에 이르게 되는 과정을 보여준다. 분단, 한국전쟁, 이념 갈등의 문제에 대해 보편적인 인간애에 기반한 화해를 추구하는 작품이라 평가된다.

This is a short story by Lim Chulwoo, published in Munhakgwa sasang (Literature and Thought) in 1984. It shows the protagonist’s reconciliation with his father, who has been the source of suffering in his life, through the discovery of an anonymous body. This work is considered to address the issues of division, the Korean War, and ideological conflicts and seek reconciliation based on universal human love.
