1957년에 발표한 김석범의 소설이다. 이 작가의 장편소설<화산도>(1997년 완간)의 전작(前作)으로 여겨질 만큼 장편<화산도>를 압축해 놓은 작품이다. 제주4.3사건의 역사적, 사회적인 의미를 살피고 그 속에서 인간의 역할과 의미를 조명한다.

Kim Sok Bom is a Zainichi Korean novelist who writes in Japanese, and this novella by Kim was published in Bungei Shuto magazine in 1957. It was later republished as a single title with two other short stories, and its Korean translation was published in 1988. Jeju Island is the writer’s ancestral home, and the story deals with the Jeju Uprising which took place on April 3, 1948 while Kim was in Japan.
