Plot

When Sugil is only seven years old, his father dies in jail for fighting against the Japanese. Sugil gets beat up by an American missionary’s son, and later the missionary injects an overdose of vaccine into Sugil and kills him. When Sugil’s mother demands an answer, the missionary talks to the Japanese police to have her taken away.

1951년 발표된 한설야의 단편소설이다. 소설은 작가가 북한에서 발표한 것으로 1956년 드라마와 무대극으로 만들어졌다. 작품은 주인공 가족이 미국 선교사와 일제경찰에 의해 압박을 당하고 죽음에 이르는 이야기다. 미제국주의에 저항하기 위한 목적으로 쓰여진 작품으로 알려져 있다.

This short story by Han Seolya was published in 1951 in North Korea, and it was made into a theater production as well as a TV drama in 1956.  Written as propaganda against American imperialism, the story tells of a family who is persecuted and killed by an American missionary and the Japanese police.
