Plot

After enrolling in college, Seon finds out one day that her father is the torture artist in the newspapers from the 1980s. After being on the run following the organization's instructions, her father suddenly appears and tells her that he will stay in the attic of her house. Seon finds herself in agony due to the sudden changes in her situation—her father and the people who are looking for her father—and is unable to find a way to deal with her father's past. Her college friend “Min” leaves Seon after learning the truth about her father, and Seon drops out of school. After her wanderings, Seon becomes a hairdresser and earns a living, but the pain in her heart does not go away. She eventually reveals her anger and disappointment toward her father, who doesn’t leave the attic, but her father does not say anything.

This is a novel by Cheon Un-yeong, published in 2011. The work focuses on the notorious “torture artist” from the 1980s as the main motif. The author reveals the inner thoughts and emotions of the torture artist, a real historical figure who has been called the devil and whose deeds have been historically evaluated, through the eyes of his daughter. Through the novel that reconstructs a politically and socially problematic character through personal relationships, the author places this individual to the universal inner dimension and tenaciously questions his past.

2011년에 출간된 천운영의 장편소설이다. 작품은 1980년대 악명을 떨쳐던 '고문 기술자'를 주요한 모트프로 삼았다. 역사적인 사실과 그에 대한 평가까지 이루어진 인물을 소설의 주요한 인물로 동원한 작가는 악마라 불리었던 그의 내면을 딸의 시선을 통해 드러내고 있다. 정치적이며 사회적으로 문제적인 인물을 사적인 관계를 통해 재구성한 소설을 통해 작가는 특정한 개인을 보편적인 내면의 차원으로 옮겨놓은 뒤 그가 행했던 과거에 대해서 집요한 질문을 던진다.
