Plot

Yeonsu (Master Yu), who wins the first place in the civil service examination at age 15, marries Lady Sa. However, they are unable to have a child for a long time, and he takes Lady Gyo as his second wife. Lady Gyo uses tricks to frame Lady Sa, eventually making her way to become Yeonsu’s legal wife. Afterward, Lady Gyo schemes with her lover to slander her husband, steal from him, and runs aways. But she encounters a robber and ends up in trouble. Meanwhile, after Yeonsu is cleared of all charges, he finds Lady Sa and executes Lady Gyo.

It is unknown when exactly this novel was written, although it is presumed to have been written between 1688 and 1692 . The characters in the novel are meant to represent real historical figures: Master Yu represents King Sukjong; Lady Sa, Queen Inheon; and Lady Gyo, Sukjong’s consort Jang. It is known as a work that reminded people of the social role of fiction.

창작연대는 미상으로, 1688년에서 1692년 사이에 쓰인 것으로 추측된다. 유한림은 숙종을, 사씨는 인현황후, 교씨는 희빈 장씨로 대비시켰다. 소설이 지닌 사회적 역할을 환기시킨 작품으로 알려져 있다.
