Plot

Lee Han-bok, Choe Chil-seong, and Jang Chi-deok cultivate the wasteland in Gando and lead their lives in their own ways. Although the Chinese community in Gando makes various demands, such as forcing Korean men to wear their hair in a queue, Koreans hang on to their “national spirit.” Centering on the Lee Han-bok family, this novel tells the history of Koreans immigrating to and pioneering Gando, including the Gando Convention, the establishment of Manchukuo, and the history of the anti-Japanese independence struggle in Gando.

This is a novel by An Sugil. Parts 1, 2, and three were published in Sasanggye in 1959, 1961, and 1963 respectively, and Parts 4 and 5 were published in book form in 1967. Instead of focusing on one protagonist, this novel is an epic that deals with the fate and history of the nation as a whole. It is recognized for providing a comprehensive and dynamic look into the flow of modern Korean history and the history of national suffering through the family history spanning three generations.
