Plot

The narrator is admitted to a closed ward to treat alcoholism. There he becomes interested in a woman who is painting. She was hospitalized with megalomania, as she believes that she’d flew to North Korea and met a high-ranking official. The narrator advises her to paint trees instead of flying. She is soon discharged thereafter, and the narrator receives an invitation to an exhibition she is holding. There he sees a painting full of airplanes, and he later learns that she has been hospitalized again.

This is a novel by Yun Hu-myong published in Hyundae Munhak (Contemporary Literature) in 1993. In the work, the first-person narrator is admitted to the hospital for having a desire to reconcile ideal and reality, and realizes a new meaning to life through a woman who paints. However, the woman who helped the narrator still fails to adapt to reality. Through this, the author discusses the difficulty of an ideal life taking root in reality as well as the barrenness of life.

1993년 <현대문학>에 발표된 윤후명의 장편소설이다. 작품에서 '나'는 이상과 현실을 조화시키고 싶어하는 욕구로 병원에 입원하고 , 그림을 그리는 여성을 통해 인생에 대한 새로운 의미를 깨닫게 된다. 그러나 '나'에게 도움을 줬던 '그녀'는 여전히 현실의 적응에 실패한다. 작가는 이를 통해 이상적 삶이 현실에 뿌리내리기 어렵다는 사실, 삶의 척박함을 이야기한다.
