Plot

The narrator hears from her mother that one of their calves was killed by her aunt’s dog, and she writes about it in a story. Her aunt reads the story and becomes upset that her niece has aired the family’s dirty laundry to the world. However, seeing different reactions by her family to the story, the narrator thinks about what it means to write and what it does for her as a person and writer.

1996년 출간된 신경숙의 소설집<오래전 집을 떠날 때>에 수록된 단편소설이다. 작품은 가족 특히 아버지에 대한 사랑을 다루고 있다.

This short story by Kyung-sook Shin is included in Long Ago, When I Left My Home, a collection of the writer’s stories, published in 1996. The story deals with family, especially love for one’s father.
