Plot

Park Cheol moves from an island village to a neighborhood on the outskirts of a city, where he lives with his mother and two sisters. In the indifference of his father who has a second family, Cheol spends five years in the neighborhood from elementary school to night middle school. Meanwhile, Cheol’s younger sister, who has mental disability, dies due to Cheol’s mistake, and his mother dies of liver cancer. Then Cheol hears about his family history from his father and vows not to forgive his father. Cheol’s remaining sister chooses to become a nun, and Cheol becomes a seafarer.

This is a novel by Lim Chulwoo, published in 2002. Originally published under the title Deungdae araeseo hwiparam (Whistling under the lighthouse) in 1993, it was revised and republished under a new title. It depicts a boy’s pain, conflict, and reconciliation, and is considered the author’s confessions.

2002년 출간된 임철우의 장편소설이다. 이 작품은 1993년에 출간된 <등대 아래서 휘파람>에서 제목과 원고를 수정하여 다시 출간되었다. 한 소년의 고통과 갈등, 그리고 화해를 담아내고 있으며, 작가 임철우의 고백록이라는 평가를 받는다.
