Plot

Jeong-rye’s mother is a “new woman” who studied in Japan, and she runs a stationery store after marriage. On the other hand, Kim Ok-im, a friend of Jeong-rye’s mother, marries her pro-Japanese collaborator husband and leads a luxurious life. After Korea’s liberation from the Japanese rule, Kim Ok-im earns money through usury.  Jeong-rye’s mother borrows money from Kim Ok-im, and Kim Ok-im wants to have the stationary store as repayment. In the end, Jeong-rye’s mother suffers financial bankruptcy, and Kim Ok-im becomes mentally bankrupt, betraying her friend for money.

This is a short story by Yom Sang-seop, published in Sincheonji in August 1949. Through two women who lead very different lives after Korea’s liberation from the Japanese rule, it sheds light on the realities of the politically and social corrupt times.

1949년 8월 <신천지>에 발표된 염상섭의 단편소설이다. 이 작품은 해방 이후 상반된 삶을 살아가는 두 여성을 통해 정치, 사회적으로 혼탁한 시대의 현실을 드러낸다.
