Plot

About to lose her job as a live-in tutor, Pak Yeo-sun, gets a job at a textile factory with Kim Gyeong-jae's help. This brings the two of them close together, but they part due to the pressure from people around them. Gyeong-jae marries Hyeon-ok, the daughter of the president of a textile factory, and Yeo-sun becomes a weaver with the help of Jun-sik, another worker at a textile factory. As a labor union leader, Jun-sik, goes to the president's office to fight against company that is trying to lay off workers. Gyeong-jae, who happens to be in the president's office, runs into Jun-sik and Yeo-sun.

This novel was serialized in The Chosun Ilbo in 206 installments from February 5 to October 28, 1936. It is largely divided into two parts: the former deals with love and conflict, focusing on Yeo-sun, Gyeong-jae, and Hyeon-ok, while the latter deals with the conflict between workers and capitalists. It depicts the reality of colonial Joseon as a whole, focusing on capitalists, intellectuals, and workers.

1936년 2월 5일부터 동년 10월 28일까지 총 206회에 걸쳐 <조선일보>에 연재되었다. 이 작품은 여순, 경재, 현옥을 중심으로 연애 갈등을 다루는 전반부와 노동자와 자본가의 대립을 다루는 후반부로 구성되어 있다. 자본가, 지식인, 노동자에 초점을 맞추어 식민지 조선의 현실을 총체적으로 묘사하고 있다는 평가를 받는다.
