1985년에 출간된 양귀자의 첫소설집<귀머거리 새>에 수록된 단편이다. 작품은 급속한 성장사회에서 훼손된 노동자들의 모습을 그리고 있다. 작가는 사무직 노동자의 불안과 갈등, 패배감을 일상의 차원에서 보여주고 있다.
