Plot

The main character, Kapsu, returns to his hometown, which he has avoided after the death of his uncle. Kapsu's father was a butcher, but after Korea’s liberation from the Japanese rule, he fell deeply into left-wing ideology and became a “human butcher.” Kapsu hated his father and the people who instilled left-wing ideology in him. However, after 29 years have passed, Kapsu returns to his hometown and begins to understand his father's life. He realizes the tense history of times has deprived people of humanity and learns that those he hated are also victims of history.

This is a novel by Kim Won-il, serialized in Hyundae Munhak from September 1977 to September 1978. It deals with people who lost their humanity due to ideologies and the history of Korea, and maintains the perspective that the way to overcome this history is to restore humanity and to understand each other through love and forgiveness.

1977년 9월부터 1978년 9월까지 <현대문학>에 연재된 김원일의 장편소설이다. 이 작품은 이데올로기에 빠져 인간성을 잃어버린 인물들과 한국의 역사를 다루고 있다. 이를 극복하는 방법으로 인간의 본성을 회복하고 사랑과 용서로 서로를 이해해야 한다는 관점을 취하고 있다.
