Plot

Pak Seong-un returns to his hometown after wandering through Primorsky, North Gando, and Beijing to fight for Korea’s independence from the Japanese rule. After returning home, Seong-un and his lover, Rosa, begin a rural enlightenment campaign. Meanwhile, when the ownership of the reed fields by the Nakdong River passes to Japan, threatening the livelihood of the villagers, Seong-un, who fights alongside the villagers, is captured as an instigator. He is tortured to death.

Descriptions(Languages 2)

This is a short story by Cho Myung-hee, published in Joseon jigwang in July 1927. It reveals the realistic response of intellectuals to the harsh reality of colonial Korea and an optimistic outlook on the development of society through the enlightenment of rural areas.
