Plot

Yoo Tae-rim goes to study in Japan on the Busan-Shimonoseki ferry, but he is conscripted as a student soldier to fight for Japan. After Korea’s liberation from the Japanese colonial rule, Lee Hyeong-sik helps him to become a middle school teacher, but the situation in Korea worsens. Eventually, the Korean War breaks out, and Yoo Tae-rim is kidnapped by a North Korean partisan unit and ends up going missing.

This is a novel by Lee Byeng-ju, serialized in Wolgan JoongAng from April 1968 to March 1970. It depicts the life of a humanist intellectual who takes a neutral position on the Korean Peninsula, which is divided by an ideological conflict between the left and the right.

1968년 4월부터 1970년 3월까지 <월간중앙>에 연재한 이병주의 장편소설이다. 이 작품은 좌우익의 이념 논리로 분열된 한반도에서 중도적인 입장을 취하는 휴머니스트 지식인의 삶을 묘사하고 있다.
