This is a novel by Kim Won Il, which was published in parts under the titles “Jeok (Enemy),” “Ppaeatgin saramdeul (The deprived),” and “Gyeoul goljjagi (Winter Valley)” in Oegukmunhak (Foreign literature)” and Segyeui munhak (Literature of the World) from 1984 to 1987. Based on the Geochang massacre, which occurred during the Korean War, this novel exposes the tragedy of a fratricidal war. It is praised for the in-depth description of the people’s hopes and despairs.
