The narrator is a train station attendant in the city who meet a dog in the rain one day on the way back to his boarding house. After that, he sees the dog several more times, and eventually he takes a different route because he is uncomfortable with the dog. Then, when he gets a call about his father's grave washing away in a flood, he remembers the dog that was shivering in the rain.
This is Lim Chulwoo’s debut short story, which won Seoul Shinmun’s New Year's Literature Prize in 1981. The work embodies the guilt and wounds felt by the protagonist through an episode from his daily life. Starting with this short story, the author uses Gwangju in May 1980 as the main subject of his works.
