Susaek tells the story of a writer who, in the midst of a mid-life crisis, begins a search for his identity. As a child and encouraged by his family, Lee Su-Ho mistakenly believed that he was the child of his father s mistress. When the mistress left, Su-Ho felt abandoned by both his real mother and that Mom, but he suppressed the painful memories. A chance visit to Susaek, where he believes that Mom has moved, leads Su-Ho to embark on a quest for that Mom, which forces him to reexamine his past, his relationship with his wife, his mother, and women in general. «Reflexiones sobre una medusa» es el triste y a la vez hermoso testimonio de la vida de Li Seil, el vaquero apodado «Medusa» por la tara física que arrastra desde niño a causa de su primo Do Gun. Venciendo mil dificultades, la vida de Li Seil transcurre de feria en feria para, a duras penas, reunir un dinero que acabará en las mesas de juego a las que Do Gun es aficionado. Sólo una mujer ha permanecido al lado del tío Medusa durante quince años, pero finalmente también ella lo abandona.Así muestra el relato al personaje al cabo de su conmovedora existencia: «Un hombre que vivió como una medusa arrojada a la arena ardiente de la playa; que no poseyó nada en este mundo ni dejó señal alguna al partir de él».

Un padre, escritor de reconocido prestigio, decide emprender una larga caminata con su hijo adolescente. A través de un paso de montaña, se dirigen juntos a la casa fundacional de la familia, el hogar de los abuelos. Durante el camino, y en una progresiva intensidad de comunicación, padre e hijo exploran la mutua intimidad de cada uno. En el curso de la andadura el padre revela al hijo las sorpresas que encierra una naturaleza aparentemente muda y uniforme: árboles, flores silvestres, arroyos, montañas, estrellas, hasta las irregularidades del rústico sendero, se llenan de sentido ante los ojos y oídos del hijo. Al mismo tiempo, el camino se carga de humanidad al relatar el padre la íntima relación que existe entre el camino y la existencia de quienes lo han recorrido desde siempre. Pero el camino es más. En un delicado y espontáneo diálogo que da paso a preguntas y respuestas, padre e hijo van desvaneciendo la tenue malla que hasta el momento les había impedido un conocimiento mutuo en profundidad. El resultado de la experiencia es el enriquecimiento del padre y del hijo, que se reconocen en las imágenes que cada uno proyecta en el otro. Un relato lleno de ternura y de amor. Amor hacia la naturaleza, hacia la humanidad, hacia la familia, concebida como la suma de eslabones que completan un destino.
