The Beginning of K-Mystery Novels

In the past, Korea has been criticized for its lack of well-written mystery novels given the high interest shown by its audience. However, the emergence of recent works which boast unique characteristics and atmospheres have rendered this comment obsolete. Korean mystery novels are now at the center of popular interest, to the extent that they have secured a place as one of the core elements of K-culture. Lies exposes yet another tragedy that was swept under the rug amid the Sewol ferry disaster. Seven Years of Darkness unravels its mysterious plot through a frame narrative structure. The Only Child shows the genesis of evil and its chronicles, while Lemon explores the excruciating time spent by those left behind after the death of someone dear. Lastly, The Disaster Tourist is a fun read in which a travel agency sells disasters as a consumeristic product. These books are full of pleasure that only thrillers can provide. I highly recommend these to readers looking for some thrill and suspense.

그동안 한국은 추리소설에 대한 대중적인 관심이 높은 것에 비해서 추리소설이라는 장르 문학으로서의 수준은 부족하다는 평을 들어왔다. 하지만 최근 독특한 소재와 분위기를 지닌 작품들이 출현하면서 이런 평가가 무색해졌다. 이제는 K-컬처로 대변되는 문화 콘텐츠 중 하나로서 한국형 추리소설이 자리매김을 했다고 평가할 수 있을 정도로 한국 추리 소설은 대중적 관심의 중심에 서 있다.

작가 권여선은 추리소설 제목으로는 이질감을 주는 <레몬>이라는 제목의 작품을 들고 우리 곁에 찾아왔다. 주인공 다언은 열아홉 살 나이에 세상을 떠난 해언의 동생이다. 17년이 지났지만 여전히 사건으로부터 벗어나지 못하고 있던 해언은 사건의 용의자 중 한 사람인 한만우와 마주하고자 한다. 미스터리하지만 차분한 내러티브는 17년 동안 과거의 시간에 묶여 있는 인물들을 메마른 시선으로 비춘다. 이런 매력으로 인해 동명의 연극으로 만들어지기도 했다.

윤고은 작가의 <밤의 여행자들>은 소재가 기발하고 발랄하다. 이야기의 전개는 겉잡을 수 없는데, 다른 한편으로 현실의 쓴맛이 느껴진다. 주인공 고요나는 재난이 일어났던 지역을 여행하는 관광 프로그램을 판매하는 여행사의 여행 프로그래머이다. 퇴출 위기에 몰려있는 그가 퇴출 위기에 몰려있는 여행지인 무이를 방문하게 된다. 그리고 그곳에서 요나는 무이가 재난 여행지로부터 퇴출되는 상황을 막기 위해서 인공적인 재난을 준비하는 사람들을 만나게 되는데, 사태는 예상을 벗어나면서 통제 불능으로 치닫는다.
