연세대 국문과를 졸업하고 같은 대학교 대학원에서 박사학위를 받았다. 고전 텍스트를 현대 문화와 소통시키기 위해 고전의 현대적 번역과 비평 작업을 진행한다. 젠더, 연령, 신분 등의 차이가 규정하는 소수문화, 하위주체의 문화적 위치에 관심을 갖고 있으며, 최근에는 전통시기 문예 양식을 중심으로 ‘잘 나이들기(Aging-well)’에 관한 자원탐색적 연구를 하고 있다. 연세대 학부대학 교수를 역임했으며, 현재 연세대 국학연구원의 HK교수다. 

 

저서로 『환상』『어린이 이야기, 그 거세된 꿈』,『어린이, 넌 누구니』『문밖을 나서니 갈 곳이 없구나』,『거지에서 기생까지, 조선시대 마이너리티의 초상』등이 있고, 공저로 『역사, 길을 품다』,『남원고사』등이 있다.
