藉由生物界互利共生、競爭分化的隱喻，對照出女性在家庭中複雜又矛盾的關係。婆婆持續被迫負擔下一代、下下一代的照顧責任，卻被視為多餘的累贅；媳婦在婚姻、職場、育兒之間浮沉掙扎，但輕易就被社會屏除在外。

即使時間不斷往前，女性在社會與家庭所扮演的「角色」卻從未進化，也不會滅絕。金息的精采描寫有如一刀未剪的長鏡頭，逐一揭開婆媳間亙古的敵對，有如一則相互吞噬、剩者為王的警世寓言。
