2015年5月20日上午11點，首爾京畿道W醫院，三名流行病學調查員抵達八樓。他們戴着內外雙層手套，仔細檢查病床、窗框、天花板，連一根毛髮也不放過，試圖找到一種新型病毒的蹤跡。

那時，整個首爾都還在熙熙攘攘中運行，在MERS席捲的前夜，這座城市沒有任何防備。淋巴癌初愈回診的牙醫金石柱、剛剛在病床前見完癌症晚期的父親后一面的實李一花、身為一家人經濟支柱的圖書倉庫管理員吉冬華，他們在同一間急診室擦肩而過，卻不知日後將面對同樣的命運。

他們中有能較為受損，短短半個月掉了20斤體重，失去自己熱愛的工作，卻無人向她道歉；有人失去了自己摯愛的父親，又接連失去了來見父親后一面的親人，被孤零零地留在這個世界；有人在隔離病房備受病痛折磨，卻始終溫柔地對待每一個人，被稱為“微笑男孩”。他們不只是被編碼的患者，疾病風暴中的每一個人，都有自己的夢想和愛，也都有自己的過去、現在和未來。
