Plot

Oh Si-hyeong, who was imprisoned for being engaged in an ideological movement, is released on bail after two years with the help of Choi Mu-gyeong. After Oh Si-hyeong's release from prison, Choi Mu-gyeong is shocked by the news of her mother's remarriage and of Oh Si-hyeong’s departure to his hometown with his father, whom he has always fought with over ideological issues, to marry the daughter of a rich man.

Published in October 1940 in Munjang, this short story by Kim Nam-cheon paints the world of a defector in the late colonial period through the main character Oh Shi-hyeong. The only work of fiction that dealt with the issues of ideology at the end of the colonial times, it was acclaimed for its artistry and popularity.

김남천이 <문장>지에 1940년 10월에 발표한 작품이다. 주인공 오시형을 통해 일제말 전향자의 세계를 일상의 차원에서 그려내었다. '일제말 유일하게 사상문제를 다룬 소설'이며 동시에 예술성과 통속성이 혼재되어 있다는 평가를 받았다.
