Plot

Shortly after the Incheon Landing in 1950, UN forces arrive at Geumsan-ri in Chuncheon. Across the river, in the local village, they begin to establish a “Texas Town,” a US military base. The villagers find work at the camp, and among them, Yongnyeo and Sundeok persuade Eonrye to become a yanggongju, a military prostitute, by telling her she can earn a lot of money. Yongnyeo, Sundeog, and Eonrye are despised by the villagers for their choice of work, and Mansik, Eonrye's son, is shunned by his friends.

1990년에 출간된 안정효의 장편소설이다. 2012년에 <은마>로 제목을 바꾼 개정판이 출간되었다. 한편 이 작품은 1988년 <Silver, Stallion, 은마>라는 제목으로 미국에서 먼저 출간되기도 했다. 작품은 한국전쟁 중에 유입된 미국문화로 붕괴되는 시골마을의 모습을 사실적으로 그려서 주목을 받았다.

This novel by Ahn Junghyo was first published in 1990, and later reissued under its current title in 2012. It was also published in the United States in 1988. The novel has received critical acclaim for its realistic depiction of the impact of American culture on rural village life in Korea during the war.
