Plot

With a great ambition, Unsim settles down in a town called Cheongshiheo in Gando. However, there is no morality to be found in the uneducated townspeople, and even young children do not understand Unsim’s teachings. Disappointed Unsim returns home. However, thinking that he has accomplished nothing in Gando, Unsim comes to see himself as a failure and gives up his ambition, becoming a paperhanger.

This is a short story published in the inaugural issue of the journal Joseon mundane in October 1924. It reflects the experience of the author Choi Seo-hae, who wandered through Gando. The story depicts the despair of Koreans by portraying the life and poverty of Joseon refugees.

1924년 10월 잡지 <조선문단>(창간호)에 발표된 단편소설이다. 간도를 유랑했던 작가 최서해의 경험이 반영된 작품이다. 조선 유민들의 삶과 빈궁을 소재로 하여 조선인들의 절망을 묘사했다.
