Sutaek thinks that his job as a newspaper reporter is interfering with his life as a literary student, so he quits his job and returns home to farm with his father, Old Man Kim. At first, Sutaek and his wife, who felt the vanity of being city dwellers, gradually develop a love for the soil and crops. After threshing all the harvested rice and deducting the rent and miscellaneous expenses from the money earned, Sutaek is bewildered when there is not much money left. He forces himself enjoy his life, however, as he carries rice plants on an A-frame on his back.

This short story reflects the autobiographical elements of writer Lee Mu-young, who quit his job as a newspaper reporter and went to work at a farm and write a novel.

1939년 10월 <인문평론>에 발표된 단편소설. 신문기자를 그만두고 낙향해 농사를 지으며 소설을 창작했던 작가 이무영의 자전적 요소가 투영되어있는 소설이다.
