Plot

Poor office worker M suffers from a sexually transmitted disease due to his promiscuous sex life, and eventually loses his fertility. However, his wife becomes pregnant, and his acquaintances are surprised. The narrator is a doctor, who is well aware that M is infertile, but M comes to the narrator and says that his child resembles his great-grandfather and that his middle toes and his child’s middle toes are alike. Feeling sorry for M, the narrator tries to avoid his gaze.

Descriptions(Languages 2)
  • English(English)
  • Korean(한국어)

This work is considered to show the virtue of humanity by having the narrator, who is a doctor and therefore can confirm the scientific fact that M is infertile and therefore unable to father a child, acknowledge that M’s child resembles M.
