The poor woman from Maechon has a greedy first son, nicknamed “Pig,” and a second son, who used to be a hard worker but is now a gambler. She struggles to support her two sons and even her two pregnant daughters-in-law. A few months later, the eldest daughter-in-law, who is mute, is on the verge of giving birth to a child, so the woman from Maechon hastily rushes to the home of her first son. When her grandchild is born safely, she looks at the infant and forgets all her hardships and even hunger.

1934년 잡지 <개벽>에 발표된 단편소설이다. 이 작품은 매촌댁의 지독한 가난을 다루면서도 두 아들과 손자를 위해 억척스럽게 살아가는 모성을 표상한다.
