Plot

Pak Hun, the son of a wealthy landowner, is in the danger of getting his land confiscated and himself purged after Korea’s liberation from the Japanese rule. But thanks to the help of Ojaknyo, the daughter of a tenant farmer Tosop, he survives and plans to leave for South Korea with Ojaknyo. Yet when he witnesses his uncle Pak Yongje commit suicide after being purged because of Tosop, he decides to kill Tosop. Hun confronts Tosop, but he regains his senses when Ojaknyo’s younger brother Samduk stops him, and finally leaves his home with Ojaknyo.

This is a novel by Hwang Sun Won, serialized in Munye from September 1953 to March 1954. Through the image of an intellectual who suffer an ordeal due to North Korea’s land reform after Korea’s liberation from the Japanese rule, it provides a realistic description of the opposing ideologies at the time. In addition, this work is considered to have addressed the issue of human salvation, in which humans overcome evil with goodness and love.

1953년 9월부터 1954년 3월까지 <문예>에 연재된 황순원의 작품이다. 광복 후 북한의 토지개혁으로 인해 시련을 겪는 지식인을 통해 당시 이념대립의 상황을 실제적으로 묘사했다. 또한 인간의 선과 사랑을 통해 악을 극복하는 인간구원의 문제를 다뤘다는 평가를 받는다.
