Yi Mongryong, the son of the governor of Namwon, and Chunhyang, the daughter of a gisaeng, fall in love after a fateful encounter on the day of the Dano Festival. They are forced to part, however, when Mongryong goes away to take his civil service entrance examination. While waiting for Myongrong’s return, Chunhyang is propositioned by a high-ranking official recently posted to Namwon. When she rebuffs him, she is arrested and then imprisoned. Finally, Mongryong returns, having passed the examination with flying colors, and orders Chunhyang’s release.

조선시대 작자미상의 고전소설이다. 소설의 이본(異本)이 120여 종이고, 판소리로 불리다가 소설로 정착된 판소리계 소설이라고 할 수 있다. 작품은 양반의 아들 이몽룡과 기생의 딸 춘향의 사랑이야기로, 문학성이 뛰어나 현재까지 다양하게 변주되며 오랜 시간 사랑을 받고 있는 작품이다.

This novel is a Joseon-era classic of unknown authorship. Originally a pansori, the story was adapted into the novel form, of which there now exist more than 120 different versions. It is a beloved popular tale depicting the love of Mongryong, the son of a nobleman, and Chunhyang, the daughter of a gisaeng.
