1996년 출간된 제20회 이상문학상수상작품집이다. 표제작인 윤대녕의 <천지간>이 수상작이며, 2010년 출간된 윤대녕의 소설집<많은 별들이 한곳으로 흘러갔다>에 수록되어 있다.  작품집에는 수상작<천지간>외에도 <궤도를 이탈한 별>(김이태), <담배 피우는 여자>(김형경), <첫사랑>(성석제), <빈처>(은희경)등 모두 6편의 후보작이 수록되어 있다. 한편 수상작인 윤대녕의 <천지간>은 작가의 '인간'에 대한 관심이 조금더 선명헤진 작품으로 볼 수 있다. 작가는 기존의 작품경향과 달리 본질보다는 현실을, 존재보다는 현존에 주목하고 있다.

This short story collection is the tie-in book for the 1996 Yi Sang Literature Award containing the winning and shortlisted short stories. The award-winning title story is Youn Dae-nyeong’s “Between Heaven and Earth,” , which was also published in the author’s 2010 collection of short stories Many Stars Drifted to One Place. Other stories in Between Heaven and Earth include “Star Off the Orbit” by Kim Yitae, “Smoking Woman” by Kim Hyoung-kyoung, “First Love” by Song Sokze, and “The Poor Wife” by Eun Heekyung. In contrast to his other work, “Between Heaven and Earth” is defined by Youn’s interest in the human condition.
