Plot

The narrator of this story is taken in by an aged Turk, Uncle Hassan, a veteran of the Korean War who makes a living as a butcher in Hannam-dong, Seoul. The narrator is a troubled boy who has questions about who his parents are and why they abandoned him. The story includes many interesting characters and their stories: for example, Aunt Anna, a caring woman who runs a restaurant, and Uncle Amos, a Greek and compulsive liar who stayed on in Korea after the war.

2010년에 출간된 손홍규의 장편소설이다. 터키인 하산과 그에게 입양된 한국인 소년이 국가, 종교, 인종을 초월하는 진정한 부자(父子)가 되어가는 과정을 그린다. 한국전쟁의 상처를 색다르게 풀어내고 있다는 평가를 받는다.

Published in 2010, this novel by Son Hong-gyu tells the story of the unlikely friendship and family bond between Hassan, a Turk and war veteran, and his adopted Korean son; the characters transcend nationality, religion, and race to become true father and son. The novel sheds a different light on the Korean War by telling the story from the point of view of someone who fought in another nation’s war and lives in its aftermath.
