1981년 출간된 오정희의 소설집이다. 표제작을 비롯하여 <중국인 거리>, <저녁의 게임>(제3회 이상문학상 수상), <꿈꾸는 새>, <어둠의 집>등 모두 8편의 작품이 수록되어 있다. 작가는 이 소설집에서 한국전쟁 이후 황폐해진 사람들의 모습과 개인과 집단의 윤리 사이에서 갈등하는 사람들을 여성화자를 중심으로 그려내고 있다. 특히 작가는 여성을 작품의 중심에 놓는 것에 그치지 않고 억압된 여성이 초래하는 균열과 분열을 미세하게 포착했다.

Published in 1981, this short story collection by Oh Jung Hee introduces eight of her stories including “Chinatown,” “The Bird,” “The House of Darkness,” and “The Evening Game,” for which she received the third Yi Sang Literary Award. She deals with people whose lives have been marked by violence and abuse after the Korean War, especially female characters who are torn between social dictates and their own desires. The stories are unrelenting depictions of female characters living under oppression with tormented lives.
