This short story collection by Choi In-hun was first published in 1976. In 2008, it was republished under the title of The Sound of Laughter as the eighth volume of Choi’s complete works. This is the writer’s only short story collection, and it has 15 short stories including “The Gray Club,” “The Jehol Diary,” “Geumo Shinhwa,” “Homecoming,” and “Elegy.” These stories cover a variety of themes and topics and the writer experiments with different narrative styles and explores the question of individualism in the midst of a mainstream Korean literary trend modelled after American and British fiction. The collection exemplifies how Choi’s fiction became a genre of its own, and how his timeless works prompt readers to reflect on present-day society.
